Academic Bicycle Challenge

From 1 to 31 May 2023, you can use the free Naviki app to track your bike rides via GPS and collect kilometres for ETH Zurich.

For the first time, we as a university are taking part in the global external page Academic Bicycle Challenge, an international competition promoting cleaner air, lower CO2 emissions and a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.

What about personal data protection?

Basically, there’s no need to worry. The first and last 400 m of the ride are not recorded, and we don’t know who is cycling, where exactly, or when. However, the Naviki app does use several trackers – so if you don’t want to be tracked, unfortunately you can’t take part in the challenge. The same applies if you don’t have a smartphone. You’ll find the privacy notice at the bottom of this page.

Excitement is mounting: who’s in the lead?

So, how’s your institute or your own team performing? Who’s out in front? Is it students or staff from the physics, computer science, architecture or administration department? You can check the latest ranking at any time on the official ABC website via the various external page leaderboards

Data to enhance traffic planning

The routes taken by Challenge participants are displayed anonymously in the form of heat maps. These visualisations will enable our traffic planners to plan access routes in a more bicycle-friendly way in the future.
