Pioneering Digital Histology-based Navigation to optimize surgical resection of malignant brain tumors
Approximately 1 in every 140 people will develop a malignant brain tumor during their lifetime. For these patients, the complete surgical removal of tumor tissue (resection) is the most critical treatment option to improve survival and quality of life. However, to precisely resect tumor tissue, we need fast and accurate detection of the tumor borders during neurosurgery.
To address this problem, we at Arago Labs are developing a novel surgical navigation device that allows surgeons to perform Digital Histology- based Navigation (DHN). This novel navigation method enables surgeons to identify tumor borders (margins) with cellular resolution in real-time, and helps them to make optimal decisions on which tissue to resect.
